We have an unusual format to the week as the A’s and Angels have a little two-game series at the Coliseum to start things off. That means we have a rare Tuesday day-game and a rare off-day on Wednesday.
The good news is that BT Sport are showing both of the two day-games here in the UK, so they will be available to watch on TV if you don’t otherwise have an MLBTV subscription.
LA Angels (H)
Season record so far: 7-3.
Gm1. Cole Irvin – Shohei Ohtani
Gm2. James Kaprielian – José Suarez
We’ve done a good job of taking advantage of an up-and-down Angels team so far this season. Ohtani has very much been one of the ups for the Halos and is having an extraordinary season, although our record against him as a pitcher is better than my memory suggested. He got two wins against us in 2018, but has only faced us twice since then. The most recent came at the end of May when he had a decent start (6 IP, 3 ER) but was out-pitched by Sean Manaea as the A’s won 3-1.
Seattle Mariners (A)
Season record so far: 3-3.
Gm1. Sean Manaea – Chris Flexen
Gm2. Frankie Montas – Yusei Kikuchi
Gm3. Chris Bassitt – Logan Gilbert
Gm4. Cole Irvin – Marco Gonzales
It seems strange to be in mid-July and to only have played the Mariners six times. Of course, we’ll make up for it the rest of the way, including facing them seven times in our last 13 games.
They come into the week just over .500 and this four-game series, and their two games against Colorado to start the week, may have a strong bearing on whether the Mariners decide to buy or sell at the trade deadline (31st July).
