UK Schedule

A’s Schedule This Week: 31st May

It’s a road-trip week for the A’s, playing in Seattle and Colorado

The A’s are off on a road-trip this week, with day-games book-ending the week and a day-off on Thursday.

Seattle (A)

Monday is a public holiday in the US as well as here in the UK, so we have a a nice day-game for us to end the long weekend with. The probable starting pitching match-ups are as follows:

Gm1. James Kaprielian – Logan Gilbert
Gm2. Chris Bassitt – Marco Gonzales
Gm3. Sean Manaea – Chris Flexen

Kaprielian pitched seven score-less innings against the Mariners last Tuesday, so this will be a good test of the rookie in seeing how he adjusts to the adjustments the M’s hitters make in getting a second look at him.

The main news for the Mariners is that Gonzales should return from the Injured List to make the start on Tuesday. There were fears that he could be in line for a lengthy absence when forearm issues cropped up at the end of April, so they will be hoping that he can ease back into action and suffer no further ill effects.

Reportedly the plan is for Gonzales to pitch no more than 3-4 innings here. As their Game One starter, rookie Logan Gilbert, hasn’t gone more than 4 innings in his first three Big League starts either, there’s potential for the A’s to really get into the Mariners’ bullpen. Seattle’s reliever corps has been pretty good so far this season, but typically the earlier you can get to the bullpen, the more chance you have of forcing the opposing manager to leave relief pitchers in for longer than he would like.

Rockies (A)

After a day off on Thursday, the A’s head to beautiful Coors Field to take on the ‘so ugly only a mother could love them’ Rockies. It’s been a predictably dismal start to the season for Colorado after another fractious off-season saw them trade away star third baseman Nolan Arenado and General Manager Jeff Bridich ‘stepping down’ a month into the season.

The probable starting pitching match-ups are:

Gm1. Frankie Montas – Austin Gomber
Gm2. Cole Irvin – Kyle Freeland
Gm3. James Kaprielian – Germán Márquez.

Only the finale on Sunday is scheduled to be a day-game, convenient for us to watch in the UK. If the starting pitchers stay on turn, that means it will be a “Kap” week for us with James making the start in both of the two early contests that we can watch live without missing out on much sleep.
